Overnight fires kill one person

Northampton County

Firefighters battle house fire in Allen Township, PA.

It started in Tannersville, Monroe County just before 11 PM. A deadly house fire that killed 79 year-old James Archer. The fire was located in the 100 Block of Archer Lane just off of Route 611. The fire burned for many hours into early Wednesday morning. One person was taken to the hospital.

Just before 3 AM Wednesday, another fire broke out in the 3900 block of Cherryville Road in Allen Township just outside of the Borough of Northampton. The fire chief arrived and reported a fully-involved house and struck the 2nd alarm. Before any apparatus arrived, the house partially collapsed to the ground and was a total loss.

The chief ordered a defensive attack. Temperatures were around 8 degrees and the firefighters had to worry about ice around the fire scene and had to work to keep apparatus from freezing. Tankers were brought in to supply water to the Engines battling the blaze.

The fire was placed under control about an hour later. Crews remained on the scene checking for hotspots afterwards.

Both fires are under investigation.
