Just after 1:00AM Tuesday, Station 18, Rescue 2, Engine 42 and Medic 75 were sent to a rescue box in the 1400 block of 4th Street in North Catasauqua for an auto extrication.
Police arrived and found a Chevy Malibu split in half. Two males were pinned in the vehicle. The front of the car landed in the yard of 1333 4th Street. The back end of the car sat in the middle of the intersection of 4th Street and Grove Street. The driver stated there was 4 people in the car at the time of the accident which prompted a large police and fire response to search the area for two more passengers. Officials feared they were thrown from the vehicle after impact.
Rescue 241 from Catasauqua arrived and put their Hurst tools in-service. Both males had to be cut out of the car. First was the passenger and then at 01:36 the driver was freed from the mangled wreckage.
The car was traveling south on Main Street from Northampton at a high rate of speed when it crossed the yellow guide line and left the road on the east side of the street striking a utility pole at the southeast corner of 4th and Penn Street. The car narrowly missed homes by a few feet. The car continued south on the sidewalk striking numerous street signs. Near Grove Street the car struck a tree and split in two with the front part of the car landing just a few feet from the home at 1333 4th Street.
Both occupants of the car were transported to the trauma center. Their condition unknown. No other occupants were located in the search.
The road remained closed for most part of the morning while North Catasauqua Police investigated.
